Tang Dynasty Horse in Yellow

Tang Dynasty Horse in Yellow

During the Tang Dynasty, the Li family implemented a branch of the military known as the tai po zhi, designed specifically for the care of military horses. Since then, the horse has become a symbol of power and strength in China.

This terra cotta sculpture draws from that symbolism. The tricolor glaze, sancai, featuring green, gold, and white, was traditionally used during the Tang Dynasty and is used in Xi'An today.
